![]() ![]() None have ever felt flattered afterwards. I can tell you now, as a male, hearing these stories of sexual harassment on the street from ALL my female friends is quite worrying. I remember very clearly the "dayuuum" joke regarding Lily and Robin, which basically states that women like getting "complimented" on the streets by complete strangers in order to feel "hot". The show makes fun of matters like sexual harassment too. Not even Barney's brother is safe from this, as he follows all the stereotypes of what straight people think gay people are like: "ohhh, they like fashion, 'girly' stuff, they dress real good, they have feminine mannerisms." The show follows all these tropes about women and gay people, like modeling Lily as nosy and envious of other women (which is clearly just a stereotype of women being jealous of other women), or Robin basically being the "cool girl" trope of this fantasy girl who is hot but is cool because she likes "male" stuff and about the gay tropes, it is pretty obvious when a character in this show is gay because that's basically their whole personality. Like, Barney taking pictures/videos without consent of his partners and showing them off (which is ilegal) Barney preying upon minors that barely cross the line to legality Ted and Barney not wanting to have sex with the same woman cause the other "touched" her first (they are not toys, man) taking advantage of drunk chicks, and so on. Also, while you may argue that "it's just played for the laughs", most of the laughs come from really serious issues. I get that the point in Barney's character is that he is an asshole and he knows it, but even then, is it necessary to portray all his sex partners as complete naive idiots? Besides the main women characters in the series, the rest are just "stuff" Barney and Ted play with. There's this double moral of how Barney is portrayed as this champ for enjoying his sex life at the fullest, while their partners are always portrayed as "sluts" for falling into his shenanigans. I wanted to share my notes with you guys, not to trash on the series, but to view the series from a new and more critical perspective, to discuss how troubling some of the series' themes really are.įirst off, I think it's pretty obvious how sexist the show is. But upon my latest rewatch earlier this year, I really couldn't stop noticing how bad this show has aged. I rewatch it every 2-3 years just for the comfort, the feels, the laughs, etc. HIMYM is one of my favorite shows of all time.
